Josh-25.jpg

Joshua Mclean

A dancer and music lover since a child, Joshua would stay up late into the night with his face glued to a tiny TV ー watching episodes of “Soul Train” and “Showtime at the Apollo” so he could learn how to dance. He danced Ballet and Hip Hop while growing up, and began dancing in an afters chool club whilst in high school.

Joshua Mclean is a professional dancer, choreographer, and performer in the global Lindy Hop community. He has taught and performed at Lindy Focus, Herrang Dance Camp, Beantown Lindy Hop Camp, Joshua believes that individual expression to music and teamwork are crucial to being your best dancing self. In the classroom, he combines his knowledge of Jazz music, Lindy Hop and Vernacular Jazz Dances, Theatre Improvisation Techniques, and Communication Theory to coach students through the development of their skills, empowering them to reveal the dancer they have the potential to be.

Jenna Applegarth

Jenna first started dancing when she was still in diapers. She began swing dancing some many years later, luckily no longer in diapers. Jenna continues to expand her dancing repertoire and share her love and knowledge of these dances with others. Although she enjoys pretty much any type of dancing and music you can move to, her first love is Lindy Hop. Her energy and passion create the perfect environment for learning, creating challenging yet applicable lessons.

Jenna has attended, coordinated, and taught various workshops and exchanges all across the globe. Some of her favorite highlights are performing at Benaroya Hall in The Jump Session Show and teaching for Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing. Above all else she believes that learning to dance should be fun. With over 10 years of teaching/coaching experience, she loves finding new ways to connect with other dancers on the floor and in the classroom.

Mariel Gastierena

Mariel started dancing Lindy Hop in 2004, when she was 14. Since that time she dedicated herself to dance Lindy Hop, Authentic Jazz and Tap and at the same time she learned different styles like jazz dance, classical, contemporary, african dance and tango.

She also studied music at the Municipal Conservatory of Buenos Aires, and later on she focused her training in swing music. She plays clarinet, piano and sings.

Along side Juan Villafañe and Manuel Bicain, she is the producer of Swingin’ Party, the biggest Lindy Hop party in South America, CA.PO.S, (the Buenos Aires Swing Dance Championships) and Swing City, the first Lindy Hop, Authentic Jazz and Tap school in Argentina.

Irina Amzashvili

Dancing has always been a passion for Irina, her expression completely and boundlessly inspired by music. She began learning Lindy Hop in 2009 at the age of 15 and fell in love with it after her first night of social dancing.

Shortly thereafter, her passion for Swing dancing expanded to include Balboa, Collegiate Shag, and solo Jazz. Since her start in Orange County, CA, Irina has taught these dances all across the U.S. as well as Europe, Asia, and Australia.

As a teacher her goal is to patiently guide her students through building solid foundations and technique as well as inspiring individuality in personal movement. Irina's greatest joy as a teacher is to see her students progress with their dancing, no matter the increment.

Anthony.jpg

Anthony Chen

Anthony first started dancing at age 8 when his parents convinced him to learn and perform Chinese lion dances. As a young teenager he stumbled upon breakdancing, which kept him out of trouble until he found his true love in swing. Since then, he has trained in other dance styles ranging from hip-hop to West Coast Swing, but most of all he enjoys using this background to expand upon his technique and creativity in Lindy Hop. On the social dance floor he is known to be playful, musical, creative, and clear. He holds first place titles from events such as Lindyfest and Lone Star Championships, Montreal Swing Riot, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, Lindy Focus, and International Lindy Hop Championships. Combined with his professional background in education, his love of both leading and following have been instrumental to making the classes that he teaches both clear and intuitive. He is an active scene builder in his community and founded Salt City Swing, where he teaches locally.

Jonathan Stout and His Campus Five feat. Hilary Alexander

Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five, featuring Hilary Alexander is the nation’s premier swing dance band. Showcasing the small-group sound of the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, the Campus Five is the most danceable swing band anywhere. The 7-piece Campus Five captures the true sound of the Swing-era, with all the energy and excitement that inspired millions to dance. Influences include the Benny Goodman Sextet, Artie Shaw's Grammercy Five, Count Basie's Kansas City Six, and the Harlem-based small groups of Illinois Jacquet, Cootie Williams, Coleman Hawkins, and Hot Lips Page.

Jonathan Stout and His Rugcutters feat. Hilary Alexander

The newest band from Jonathan and Hilary, the Rugcutters are a 9pc band built on the same frame as the Campus Five, but built to take advantage of having 4 horns. The 4 horn format can function as normal small-group swing band, but it can also function more like a small big band, with independent reed and brass sections.

The repertoire starts with tunes that had been on the Campus Five's "To-Do" list for years, but just couldn't satisfactorily be scaled down to two horns, and also includes updated versions of some of the Campus Five's classic tunes that were rearranged to utilize the additional textures possible in a bigger band.

Making it's debut at the International Lindy Hop Championships in 2018, the Rugcutters features the same unmatched danceability as the Campus Five but with a bigger palette of tonal colors to draw from.

The Candy Jackets Jazz Band

The Candy Jacket Jazz Band is comprised of some of the best swing practitioners in the United States. Since forming in 2016, they have successfully forged their own path through the modern day "vintage" jazz scene.

The group, led by composer/arranger/drummer - Josh Collazo, prides itself on performing original compositions in a style that is reminiscent of the famous jazz & swing artists of the 1930's & 1940's. Tight arrangements, clever hooks, and a heavy dose of swing allows the bands signature sound to shine brightly through. No carbon copies here though - just solid playing filled with musicality, skill, respect, and deep knowledge of jazz history to build upon.

Thanks to a loyal fan base, The Candy Jacket Jazz Band has had the pleasure of performing at many national events, such as Lindy Focus, The International Lindy Hop Championships, DCLX, and The Redwood Coast Music Festival. A few highlights include headlining at The Wiltern Theater (LA), Swingin' at the Savoy (SF), and The 2017 San Diego Jazz Festival.

Count Basie Tribute Big Band

The new Count Basie Tribute big band is a 17 piece orchestra led by Denver’s own Gabe Mervine. They will be playing some of your favorite tunes by the Count, and are sure to keep you jumpin’ at this years LOTR. Don’t miss them playing a Sunday dinnertime show in the Galleria. Dance floor and pop-up bar on site.

William James "Count" Basie was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. In 1935, Basie formed his own jazz orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, and in 1936 took them to Chicago for a long engagement and their first recording. He led the group for almost 50 years, creating innovations like the use of two "split" tenor saxophones, emphasizing the rhythm section, riffing with a big band, using arrangers to broaden their sound, and others.

Denver Youth All Stars

The Denver Youth All Stars (DJC All Stars) is composed of high-school Jazz musicians. They are led by Dr. Ed Cannava, who served as the Director of Bands at Regis University. The All Stars play regularly at Jazz clubs in Denver, but have also played on tours to New Orleans and outside the US. Check out more about their accomplishments and band members on their website.

Duane Grover

A recent transplant to Denver, Duane DJ’d locally in the DC area dance scene for nearly ten years, as well as a handful of national-level events over the years in Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Dallas, and Austin.

He generally sticks to the blues, but started out by spinning swing for Lindy hoppers, and looking forward to getting back to some of his old favorites. He’ll do his best to keep the Lindy crowd, the blues folks, and anyone else on the floor dancing and happy.

Laurel Ryan

Laurel’s the type of person who plays her music loudly as a blessing to anyone who hears it. She loves introducing dancers to new versions of their old favorites, working hard to blend big band, trad jazz, early R&B, and quartet sounds into a seamless set. She’s also always trying to work more Nat “King” Cole into everyone’s lives, so keep an ear out for his silky tones. Laurel looks forward to every opportunity to blow your mind with her impeccable taste. In advance: you’re welcome.

Kara Fabina

One thing that you can count on from this DJ is a vast understanding of genres. Because of her background in various dance styles, Kara brings a depth of musical knowledge appropriate for dancing. Her loves vary from House to Funk, Old School Hip Hop, Vintage Jazz, Blues and Soul. She has a not so secret adoration for mashups, and has even dabbled in beat production and mixology. With a desire to be a jill of all trades, she began Dj’ing at house parties in 2011. Since then she has gone on to DJ at local dance venues and events throughout the country. Based in Colorado Springs, she works to provide dancers with a variety of blues, jazz, and swing music in her sets.

She is particularly excited to be DJing the Soul Party at Sunday’s late night again this year!

Battle on the Rocks

Each year CMDance and our amazing partners at The Funkinetic Project are proud to announce a special addition to our annual Lindy on the Rocks event: Battle on the Rocks! To celebrate the connection between Vintage (Lindy Hop, Shag, Charleston, Vernacular Jazz) and Modern Street Dance (Hip-Hop, Bboying, Locking, House, Waacking, Popping), two teams of invited dancers will face off to both vintage jazz and modern music while representing their respective styles. Through the time-honored tradition of battle, we'll be exchanging and building ties between two cultures that share common ancestry.

Come out to the Studio Loft on Saturday, September 14th 8pm and build with us!

Travel

Flying Into Denver

The nearest major airport to Denver is the Denver International Airport (DIA). DIA is a stylish, up-to-date facility receiving all popular airlines. You can find deals at respective discount airfare sites or directly from your preferred airline. We suggest checking fares often and signing up for low fare alert services. Research shows that the ideal time to buy your airline tickets is generally about 54 days before travel. After 54 days, prices begin to rise and then shoot up 30 days before the flight. Remember to check out package discounts for hotels and car rentals, if you wish. Here are some sites you can use to find deals and set up price alerts:

Getting Around Denver

Rideshare programs like Uber or Lyft are highly active in Denver. We also have Car2GO, a convenient smart-car rental service providing over 400 2-person cars spread throughout Denver; just take it, drive it, and park it, within the designated city area (membership required).

RTD Buses – For public transportation, our RTD buses and light rail system are an effective and inexpensive method of getting around Denver. Check out the RTD website for a helpful Trip Planner and more details on Denver public transit.
Bird Scooters are an efficient/affordable option to get around downtown. App download required.
Lime Scooters are another app based scooter option to get around downtown. App download required.

Getting to Downtown Denver from DIA

The A Line will get you from the DIA airport to Union Station (1.5 miles from the Studio Loft/Curtis Hotel) for only $10.50 in approx 40 minutes. This is by far the most affordable and efficient way to get downtown from the airport. Last train to leave DIA departs at 1:26am. Trains departing Union Station start as early as 3:15am.
