Hot Night Fusion Weekend Ever since the dawn of social dancing, people have been combining dance styles into an intertwined fusion of dance expression.
Fusion originated by blurring the lines between music and dance aesthetics and now has progressed towards becoming its own dance form where dancers seamlessly flow between styles, cultivating a whole new skill set. At Hot Night Fusion Weekend, we celebrate combination, flow, and new dimensions of music where we individually teach and study pure dance forms and then find ways to integrate them. This event supports these dance concoctions by providing 20 hours of classes throughout the weekend with top instructors from several different dance styles. Some genres will be progressive so you can choose a style to study in depth and other styles will be taught as electives to open the door to new opportunities in your dancing. The evening dance parties will take place in three different rooms at the gorgeous Curtis Hotel to themed sets played by some of the best DJs in blues, tango, latin, WCS, fusion, and beyond, and stay tuned for announcements about special guests and additional programs. So join us for an unforgettable weekend that will take your dancing to new heights. Hot Night Fusion Weekend runs concurrently with Lindy on the Rocks with classes in the same venue and a pass gets you access to all three rooms of dancing (all-access or dance only) and over 20 hours of classes (all-access pass). Nicole Trissell
With more than 20 years of dance training and over a decade of teaching under her belt, Nicole is a movement and communication professional with a mission.
Nicole enjoys enabling dancers to use their body in the most healthy way possible and her ability to diagnose and change postural issues is only exceeded by her love for cultivating dance as an art form. Whether you want to add technical excellence to your dance or experience music in a whole new, visceral way, Nicole has got you covered. Dance has been one of the most important forces for growth in Nicole’s life and she is excited to share her joy of dance with you.
Nathaniel Abrea
Nathaniel is a nationally acclaimed blues dancer who loves to social dance, compete, and teach as much as he sleeps. He is known for having precise musicality, playful movements, and expressive body shaping as a lead, follow, and solo dancer.
Nathaniel first explored dancing through a catchy choreography on YouTube in his bedroom, and continues to do so to this day. Coming from a non-technical background, he is highly attuned to his intuition for body mechanics and musicality. His intuition-first approach allows him to craft intellectually accessible and relatable lessons that reward students with new techniques to challenge themselves on their own time. He also executes each lesson with as much patience as he has excitement, and hopes to empower his students to start navigating their own personal expression within Blues.
Nathaniel has worked with dedication in the past several years, and competed and placed at many national events such as: BluesSHOUT!, Austin Blues Party, Rose City Blues, and more. He has won competitions as a Lead, Follow, and Solo dancer, and is proudly recognized as the first to officially qualify in the Blues All Star division as both a Follow and a Lead.
Nathaniel continually strives for new ways to grow, and for more things to learn, in hopes that he can share his newfound knowledge and experiences with his students.
Joe Demers & Jes Cutler
Joe DeMers and Jes Cutler have been teaching together for three years. They are powerhouse instructors who engage total beginners to experienced dancers. In an intensive, ‘all-levels’ approach, they leave students feeling focused, guided, included, and encouraged. As teachers, they have beautiful interplay and teach strongly to both roles. Followers in their class feel equally challenged and focused in their experience of technique, movement, and making beautiful lines, shapes and expressions.
Drag Blues is a lovely dance culmination of Blues aesthetic, jazz elements, dynamic shapes, soft close embrace connection, and Frame Matching. Joe and Jes explore the range of musicality and shapes within a partnership, alignment, body mechanics, and teach moves for the social dance floor. They give language to connection in a way that empowers partners to clearly express timing, shape changes, weight transfers, and a sharing of energy that is efficient, comfortable and fun.
LaTasha Barnes
LaTasha “Tasha” Barnes is an artist, dancer, entrepreneur, and ambassador of culture. Born and raised in Richmond, VA, Tasha has enjoyed much of her life immersed in jazz, funk, soul, and R&B music and dance thanks to her DJ father and dancing family. Having turned that lifelong passion into cultural activism she serves towards achieving the mission of Urban Artistry, Inc to preserve the arts that represent the urban experience, as a directing member, performer and educator. She is celebrated for her musicality, athleticism, and joyful presence throughout all her dance forms which include: House, Hip Hop, Waacking, Vernacular Jazz, and Lindy Hop. Through her own expression and endeavors Tasha hopes to inspire fellow artists to cultivate an authentic sense of self in their creative expressions and daily lives.
Rachel Farley
Rachel is a Movement Coach and Certified Neurosculpting® Facilitator. She is dedicated to developing customized workshops that provide sustainable tools to empower businesses, dancers, social justice activists, and educators to thrive. Participants leave workshops with a deeper understanding of how our minds and bodies are intrinsically linked and in constant communication. Rachel received her B.S. in Pure Mathematics and Secondary Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and her Masters in Educational Policy and Leadership from University of Colorado at Denver. After teaching in urban high schools for 7 years, Rachel left the classroom to pursue her goal of combining dance and mindfulness practices to strengthen communities by cultivating healthier relationships rooted in trust and empathy. With over 23 years of experience in partner dancing including Brazilian Zouk, Lindy Hop, Blues, and Ballroom, she approaches the body and brain from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Workshops incorporate the 5 step Neurosculpting® process to regulate our emotions, heighten neuroplasticity, and edit our stories in a way that better serve us. Donato Juárez
Donato is one of the most talented of the new generation of tango dancers in Argentina. Musical, elegant, precise, driven, Donato teaches tango as he dances it: with energy, passion and sensitivity. From his hometown of Mar del Plata in Argentina, he has been part of a group of enthusiastic young dancers that has continued to tirelessly explore the intricacies of this dance. He has studied with many renowned teachers who were quick to notice his impressive technical skills.
Donato has been invited to international tango festivals in the United States, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Europe (Italy, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Greece, Switzerland, Finland), and Mexico and has performed in many theaters in Argentina. He has been invited to perform, with Cecilia Gonzalez, in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 International Argentine Tango Congresses (CITA) in Buenos Aires. Since 2009 he also takes part as a master teacher .
Diana Cruz
Originally from Asunción, Paraguay, she began her dance studies in her home country: Centro de Artes Cascanueces, Luque; Instituto de Bellas Artes, Asunción; Instituto Municipal de Arte, Asunción. The process of dance-learning placed her in various Performing Arts schools around Argentina, Brazil and Chile.
As a professional dancer, she joined several ballet companies, such as: Ballet Clásico y Moderno Municipal de Asunción, Ballet Uninorte (Asunción), Compañía Intermitente de Danza Contemporánea (Asunción), David Taylor Dance Theatre (Denver).
Diana has received a Comprehensive Pilates Teacher Training Certification by BASI (Body Arts and Science International). She has taught the Pilates method in several studios of Asunción, Buenos Aires, and continues teaching intermittently in Denver, CO.
Her discovery of Argentine Tango has given her yet another turn in the never-ending, cyclical journey of exploring new ways of moving and expressing. She is currently teaching and performing Argentine Tango around the U.S. and abroad, in a dance partnership with Nick Jones, as well as continuing to develop her solo carrier as teacher, choreographer, producer, director and performer. Her work as a choreographer includes pieces in dance productions like: the “Tango Zone” (NY), “Tango Times”, “Cortinas”, “Avenida Vivencias”, “Piazzolla, En Sus Palabras” (CO). She produced and directed various dance production, such as “Avenida Vivencias” (2015), the innovative experimental production “Oniria Tango” (2016), “Estación NaturalTango” (2017), and the upcoming “Nostalgias” (April, 2018).
Diana incorporates her multi-disciplinary techniques (Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Modern Dance, Latin American Folk Dances, Pilates, Yoga, Singing, Poetic Interpretation and many Tango Dance styles) into one cohesive dance. She uses these techniques to create powerful, musical, unique performances. Her understanding of biomechanics gives her an astute approach as a movement teacher. She studied Poetic Interpretation and Voice Training throughout the years of dance training; and joining the Orquesta Típica Natural Tango, as a singer, in 2010, has been an important addition to her artistic career. She holds a degree in Psychology from the Universidad Nacional de Asunción, a study that has enhanced her understanding of the human mind and body interaction. Miss Cruz has created her own line of Tango shoes for women, Cruzartango, which is a continual exploration of organic and ergonomic dance shoes.
Bennie Vo
Bennie is a licensed massage therapist with certifications in medical massage, neuromuscular massage, trigger point therapy and spurts massage. He is teaching a class focused on injury prevention for Dancers. The main topics covered are common injuries for Dancers, how to recognize these issues and self and partnered exercises.
Lindy On The Rocks 2018 is run in Conjunction with Hot Night Fusion Weekend 2018… All Access passes give you access to Lindy Hop classes as well as the fusion classes. Lindy on the Rocks has brought in Skye Humphries, Gaby Cook, Nathan Bugh, Latasha Barnes, Joshua McClean, Jenna Applegarth, and Jon Tigert to teach swing classes. Zouk Connection
Join Rachel in an exploration of connection within Brazilian Zouk. While she preaches “it’s all about connection” she does not ask her students “just to feel it”. You will develop the necessary somatic responses and physical discipline required to communicate, move as a unit, and connect. As a group, we will seek to heighten our sensitivity and understand the practical skills necessary to develop a seamless social dance such as tone, balance, body mechanics, quality of movement, and musicality. Connecting involves surrender, vulnerability, and responsibility, whether you’re connecting with a partner, the music, or yourself.

Apply your knowledge of connection to several basic figures and shapes within Brazilian Zouk. This class will focus on essential concepts such as timing, frame, and balance to ensure your basics are clean, clear and comfortable.

Punctuation
Punctuation is important. It breaks up our thoughts, makes us easier to understand and can even add some pizazz to our communication. This class will focus on blues moves and choices that break up, accent, and punctuate our dancing so our expression can really shine.

Afro-Dancehall Fusion
Come learn some dance moves and sequences that are trending among the Afrobeats, Kuduro, and Dancehall scenes such as the Gwara Gwara, Azonto, Abrir, Cloud Nine, and more. The moves we learn will then be reinforced through a 30-second or longer choreo, depending on the flow of class.

NaturalTango Quintet – Friday Night
We are excited to welcome the NaturalTango Quintet, one of Denver’s favorites, to the stage on Friday night. One of the most exhilarating experiences in dance is to be in a milonga with a live orchestra. Experience the energy from the musicians and a sound that fills up even the cracks between the floorboards, this is one of those rare moments where inspiration meets reality!”
The NaturalTango Orchestra was formed in 2008 and has since evolved into one of the most exhilarating and coherent tango orchestras in the States. Our goal is to work with excellent musicians to create danceable live music. The traditional instrumentation and excellent arrangements of this tango orchestra make it a must see event! The orchestra focuses on the golden age works of major orchestras like Carlos Di Sarli, Juan D’Arienzo & Osvaldo Fresedo.
Chance’s End – Saturday Night
As Chance’s End, San Francisco-based producer Ryan Avery creates electronic music fronted by solo violin. The project was formed in 2001 to explore how acoustic violin sounds when featured prominently in places it normally isn’t. With a laid-back downtempo sound reminiscent of Groove Armada, the group is helping redefine the role of the violin in popular music.
A violinist for almost 30 years, Ryan first studied as a classical musician before branching out into other styles such as bluegrass, blues, and jazz. Ryan began mixing violin and electronica to add a unique element to his early electronic productions, out of which Chance’s End was born. Vocalist Emily Zisman was brought on in 2010, whose experience with folk music, soul, and swing now also figure prominently in the group’s music. The duo’s very different backgrounds make electronica the perfect common ground to blend their styles and influences. You can hear some of their music HERE.
Diana & The Big Time Band – Sunday Night
Diana Castro leads the Big Time Band with big time vocals. Hailing from New Orleans, Diana is a local gem to Denver’s party scene. The Big Time Band features Blues, Soul, R&B, Funk, Pop music and more to keep you dancing the night away. Diana has a unique energy and captivates her audiences while singing everything from Etta James’ to Michael Jackson’s popular hits. Hot Night Fusion Weekend is so lucky to have a band that provides such variety for our dancers.

La Wanna M. Larson aka LL DJ Wannie
La Wanna has an unique connection to the dance world. She served as the executive director of Black American West Museum and curator. She believes music, culture and history is the rhythm of our society.
La Wanna is now the assistant executive director of CMDance. Each year this innovative non profit brings the arts to thousands of students in their classroom, dance events and monthly dances.
LL DJ Wannie is a fusion DJ with roots in West Coast Swing, Blues, Soul, Zouk, Rhythm and Blues, EDM, Ballroom and more. She is a seasoned DJ who has been invited and played at numerous major dance events and local dances. She plays a mix of new and classic music to create a memorable set. She travels regularly across the country to DJ and dance at dance events.
A fun fact about La Wanna is she is related to Otis Spann a legendary Blues artist.
John Miller
Since the age of 17, John has DJed nearly everything, from 7-person house parties to 700-person festivals, high-school sock-hops, weddings, and funerals (very little dancing at the latter). His selections are the result of intensive study and a love for the eclectic. He specializes in DJing Tango from all eras, Blues on vinyl, and fusion.

Rated as Denver’s Best Jazz club by Westword Magazine for 15 years running, Dazzle is a live music and culinary staple in the Denver arts scene. The Studio Loft is an beautiful event space with a cathedral ceiling, exposed brick, warm-colored walls, and a spacious wood dance floor. This venue has vast room, a bar, and plenty of seating.

The Curtis Hotel

The Curtis Hotel is an eclectic styled hotel with multiple ballrooms perfect for hosting our dance classes. We have secured a room block for $129 a night. All ballrooms are located on the 3rd floor of the hotel, and you do not need to be staying at the hotel to access the ballrooms. Marco Polo, Red Rover, and Hopscotch ballrooms will be available for classes during the day.
Parking: There is metered street parking available, as well as a parking garage and lot (available all day) within 2 blocks of the hotel. The hotel also has valet parking available for $45/day. Parking garages and lots start at $12/day. Parking meters are free on Sundays.

CMDance is changing our format for volunteers for the 2018 year. Volunteers (now recognized as Event Staff) will get reimbursed $$ per hour for their work. If you are interested in working at the event, please read the following information, and fill out this form. You will need to purchase a pass to the event. If you are in a financial situation that makes this not possible for you, please contact Event Director Joe Smith at JoeS@CMDance.org for information on getting a case by case exception to this rule.
Workers at the event will be paid $10.20/hr of work completed. Payment will be paid at the end of the event.
Please be prepared to fill out a W9 at the event before you receive payment.
Workers are able to work as many, or as little shifts as they would like.Most shifts are 1 hour blocks of time, some shifts require a 2-3 hour block of time, which will be indicated in the schedule when signing up for shifts.
Once the schedule has been finalized, the worker is required to cover their shift if they are no longer able to work for a time that they signed up for.
Workers are responsible for managing their own schedule. i.e. Don’t sign up for a shift during contest prelims if you are competing.
All workers must adhere to responsibilities provided to workers prior to the event.
Hot Night Fusion Weekend is thrilled to have out of town visitors for the event. We work hard to help facilitate affordable accommodations for those travelling to Denver for the weekend. We have a nifty HOUSING FORM for you to fill out.
However, housing is NOT guaranteed, and the housing form will be closed August 25th, 2018!
We have secured a small block of rooms at The Curtis Hotel.
