Please see our 2023 event teachers below. You will see some of these again plus some new faces!

Flouer Evelyn

Flouer is a Dance Instructor & Embodiment Coach from New York City, currently based in Turin, Italy. She has been teaching partner dance since 1999 and Fusion since 2011.  She spends most of her time Blues Dancing, but has an MFA in dance and a background teaching and performing Contemporary, Latin Ballroom, ballet, and ice skating.  She has won plenty of partner dance competitions in various styles, and has performed & taught all over the globe.

Sure, yeah, blah blah!  But what’s actually important is that Flouer has a warm, encouraging way of challenging you to grow in your dancing, and if you want, helping you link this growth to the rest of your life.  She is known for her values of artistry and emphasis on dance history, complimented by her ability to break down any movement into incredibly specific detail.  Coming from an academic background, Flouer loves offering simple yet profound ways to give structure to your Fusion dance.  https://flouerdances.com

“The reason to master technique is so the body does not prevent the soul from expressing itself” – la Meri

Mark Carpenter - 2024 confirmed!

Mark Carpenter is a dancer, dj, teacher, and organizer, focusing largely on the fusion scene and its emerging forms and conventions. He has organized with, taught at, and dj’d for dozens of events spanning four continents (and two languages). He has been teaching for over 15 years and is at the forefront of shaping what fusion is and what it can become. Mark is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and exploration of fusion and continually strives to make the impossible look easy, and the easy look impossible.

Pomona Lake

Pomona Lake, a product of the west coast of Canada, has been immersed in dance since her early days, sneaking out of her parents' place in high school for blues and fusion parties. A true jack-of-all-dances, she has won Lindy Hop, Blues, and Fusion competitions worldwide as a leader, follower, and soloist. She draws inspiration from unexpected sources such as contact improvisation, clowning, and her experience in the film industry. Her dance style is characterized by its playful, rhythmic, and raw nature, with an emphasis on improvisation and an unwavering dedication to musicality and expression.

Kenya Soul

Kenya Soul, hailing from the Bay Area, draws inspiration from a rich tapestry of hip hop, Lindy Hop, blues, and occasionally anime. His teachings are rooted in improvisation, connection, and musicality, breathing life into stories through movement. He seeks to build bridges between divergent communities through shared artistic language, which is how he found his home in Fusion. His Black-experience-centered philosophy sits at the heart of all of his and Pomona's lessons. Together, they create a clear, play-focused, and light-hearted teaching environment where students are often surprised with their own creative prowess.

Ally Yancey

Ally is a body geek and a movement addict. She's been dancing since she could walk, but discovered the world of partner dancing first in 2004 when she fell in love with Lindy Hop. She found herself obsessed with Blues by 2006, and since then she's gone on to practice several other dance and movement studies including Tango, West Coast Swing, contemporary, hip hop, house, aerial silks, pole dance, and the Alexander Technique. She has taught Blues and Fusion on the West Coast since 2007, internationally for a decade, and is a certified Contemporary Alexander Technique instructor.

Over the years of dance exploration, Ally has developed a keen fascination with the design and mechanics of coordination in the human body, and now enjoys teaching all of her classes through the lens of body discovery. Her classes are full of geekery—to her, curiosity, fascination, and silliness are the bedrock of an effective (and enjoyable) learning environment. Her passion is to not only teach people how to dance technically, but to simultaneously engage with their bodies playfully, creatively, and with deeper understanding.

Rachel Leigh Farley

A globally sought after instructor, Rachel has an impressive teaching record that is ever expanding. Her range and reach show that her experience and ability to connect students is unmatched.  She is the founder of the Denver Zouk School, organizes Dirty Dance Camp, and has taught over 5,000 students at festivals and retreats throughout the U.S and Mexico. Rachel has 20 years of cross-training in social dances including Brazilian Zouk, Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, Blues, Salsa, and Fusion. Rachel invites her students into a classroom where her gentle flow and playful styling will support any dancer in tapping into their own creative expression. Her workshops have impacted classrooms, companies, and dance studios across North America. Learn more at www.RachelLeighDance.com

Hunter Gill

Hunter has spent the last six years fully immersed in the world of dance. With a love for fusion, Hunter has explored a variety of styles, with a main focus on West Coast Swing, Blues, and Brazilian Zouk. Hunter's unique perspective on dance comes from his experience blending Brazilian Zouk with other fusion styles, creating a style that is uniquely his own. His dedication to his craft has taken him around the world, including three months in Brazil where he studied with masters of the art. Hunter's passion for dance goes beyond the physical movements. He is passionate about connecting with people and creating special dances, regardless of his partner's background or skill level. His ability to make anyone feel comfortable on the dance floor has made him a sought-after partner among dancers of all levels. Hunter's love affair with dance continues to drive him forward, as he seeks to push the boundaries of what is possible. His creative energy and dedication to his craft make him a true asset to the dance community.

Tybaldt Ulrich

Tybaldt Ulrich loves partner dancing, and has been dancing most days since the mid 90’s. Most known for competitive Hustle, West Coast Swing, Lambada, and Carolina Shag, he has also studied with many masters of, (and professionally performed)- many other dance styles.

He has been teaching in NYC since 2000, with Emmanuel Pierre Antoine (EPA), Stepping Out, Dancesport, You Should Be Dancing, Salsa Salsa, Starlight, G&J, and ZenZouk.

He has performed as a dancer or musician in numerous shows and competitions and shows on 4 continents, including the touring Swing show Swing Dance America, and most recently singing and dancing the lead role in the original musical Bum Farto.

He began as a musician, with a degree in Ethnomusicology from the University of North Texas, where he began dancing, starting with performing traditional Ewe music and dance, eventually studying in Ghana and Togo, west Africa. He dances full time and has been teaching over a thousand lessons a year for the last two decades, specializing in partnership skills, and kind creativity grounded in music and dance traditions.

Vanessa Stephan

Vanessa fell in love with partner dancing back in 2004 and began pursuing every dance style and avenue available to her from Ballroom, Lindy Hop, and Blues, to Tango, WCS, and Fusion. She taught Ballroom for a number of years in both a studio and university setting, and from the very beginning, she was interested in both the leader and a follower's perspective. The richness of what dance can teach us about an endless range of relational concerns fascinated her: communication, expectation, structure, flexibility, play, limitation. Eventually, Tango subsumed her focus with it's depth of connection and seduced her with it's demanding technical precision, so in 2014, Vanessa moved to Boulder with a firm resolve to learn Tango in a granular, soul consuming way and largely succeeded. She became first a Teaching Assistant and then an Instructor for Gustavo" Naveira and Giselle Anne at their Boulder Tango Studio - a prestigious role which had not previously existed. There she gained a deep understanding of the structure, technique, and responsibility of dancing with another person and broadened her teaching style. Vanessa is now known in the community for her depth of knowledge in the area of Tango technique.
Vanessa's second greatest love has always been teaching. In fact, scant are the times in her life when she wasn't involved in teaching something. Teaching isn't only about conveying information. It's about patience, strategy, creativity, and listening. To understand someone's question is to understand their way of thinking which is a kind of window into their world view. People come to dance for different reasons and with different values, and imparting something valuable to them is the endlessly exciting job of the teacher.

Jamie-Lynn Figure

Jamie-Lynn has been teaching movement arts including partner dancing, yoga, flexibility, and strength & stability training for the better

part of her lifetime. Her journey began in competitive figure skating, progressed off the ice onto the ballroom floor, and found its way to

Argentine Tango, Lindy Hop, and Blues. Please don't ask her to pick just one, there's something meaningful and unique about each of them! She's been involved with the fusion community since the 2008 Houston Fusion Exchange and joined the FX teaching staff in 2014-15. Across all connected partner dances, she believes connection begins with connection to yourself: your own body, your own movement and balance, your own abilities and edge. She strives to create playful, connected classrooms in all areas of her practice.

Hot Night Fusion Weekend is run in conjunction with Lindy on the Rocks and the Denver Jazz Festival. All Access passes gains you attendance to all events at HNFW, LotR, and DJF.

Class Descriptions

2024 CLASS INFO WILL BE UPDATED AS IT COMES IN

Check out last year’s exciting class topics below!

Flouer & Mark’s Classes

Buckets / Modes

Conceptual Class - All Levels, prerequisite for Essences

We will combine Flouer and Mark's "foundational fusion frameworks" by looking at dance styles through a broad categorization lens, using the underlying elements to alter our own dancing and giving people choices about how they dance. This is a super important class for fusion dancers, and something we want to see more of in the wider scene.

Essences

Conceptual Class - High Level, requires understanding of "buckets" or "modes" as they relate to fusion dance

An hour of diving deep into high theory in a fun way.  We’ll deconstruct partner dances by distilling and isolating different parts of the “essence” of each dance.  After exploring the edges of these things, we will reconstruct new fusion dances from the bottom up.  Ultimately, this is the most exciting part of fusion dancing (in our humble opinion).

Frame Class

Technique Class - All Levels

A door frame gives structure to a door, an art frame gives structure to a painting— just as our “dance frame” (the quality in which you hold another person) gives structure to our partner dancing.  This class will cover the basics of dance frame and explore how different types of frames accomplish different goals and how to apply them in your fusion dancing.

Challenging Combinations

Moves/Technique Class - High Level

Moves are cool. Sequences of moves with interesting transitions are cooler— and harder. Dive into a collection of some of Flouer and Mark’s favorite combinations that pull from a variety of dances including tango, swing, ballet, modern, and blues. A strong ability to lead or follow is required for this fast-paced class, designed for people who have mastered frame, tone matching, and balance. We will be building off of down-the-line turns, single axis (pivot) spinning, and linear/rotational momentum, with the ultimate goal of being able to lead these moves in a sequence, and incorporate them into your fusion.

Pomona & Kenya’s CLasses:

African-American Rhythms in Fusion: from Lindy Hop to Rap flow

Conceptual Class- All Levels

Explore how rhythms and musical traditions from jazz and blues (such as syncopation, call & response, and lead-follow dynamic) flow from early Black American music and dance culture into today's fusion dancefloors.

Show Off

Technique Class- All Levels

How do you extend your connection from your partner to the entire room? How do you express yourself clearly through movement and captivate your audience? Dancers of all levels are invited to consider their dancing from a performance perspective using techniques from Pomona's clowning background, experience with dance competitions, and work as a dancer in the film industry.

Dance Role, Black Culture, and Partnership

Half Lecture/Half Conceptual Class- All Levels

Half philosophy lecture, half dance class where we will seek to understand the cultural values that bring us to our embodied ideas about what "lead" and "follow" can, and should be. We will experiment with different lead-follow dynamics to hone and widen our listening and connection skills.

Contact Improv & Clowning for The Fusion Dancer

All Levels

A fun warm up class exploring movements and techniques from Pomona’s extensive clowning and contact improv background.

Rachel & hunter’s Classes

Boom Chick Chick

All Levels
Together we will explore the "gush" and flow of a few signature Brazilian Zouk moves. You will not only learn rhythm and footwork, but also Zouk's unique approach to energy resolution into the floor. Then we'll show you entry and exit opportunities for weaving these elements into your fusion dance.

Endless Spine

All Levels
Use techniques from Brazilian Zouk to explore movement in the spine and its use in body undulations and head movement. We'll show you the core techniques and safety rules necessary to execute this kind of movement with gentleness and care. Then we'll show you how to suggest and listen to this kind of movement in Fusion settings, as we adapt to our partners and their individual level of body awareness.

Vanessa & Cynthia’s Classes:

How Tango Works

All Levels

In an attempt to demystify how and why Tango works the way it does, we will start at the very beginning by exploring concepts like rotation, twist, and axis in basic Tango moves like el basico (the basic 8), ochos (figure 8's), giros (grapevines), and hamacas (rotating rock steps). The ideas in this class will be useful for all levels as you import them into your fusion dancing.

Was That Tango?

High Level- requires strong understanding of frame and the ability to balance on one leg

Undeniably, Tango has some cool moves. Sometimes you just want to spice up your fusion dance with a few here and there, ya know? Come learn some ganchos, boleos, and cortes. Experience moving with a partner using frame is a necessity for success in this class along with a general sense of balance on one leg.

Tybaldt’s Classes:

Hustle Fundamentals

All Levels

Hustle is well named- it is not a dance of stillness! Explore the fundamental rhythms and shapes of this dance as you build your foundations for the Hustle series this weekend.

Hustle Random Pattern Generator

Hustle Fundamentals Prerequisite Recommended

Learn how to create a look of continuous content & movement just by changing simple variables, plus explore some spins that redirect for more!

Hustle: Drama, Groove, and Play

Hustle Fundamentals Prerequisite Recommended

In this class we will step out of the basic rhythms explored in previous classes to strut and move in new ways. Keep your eye out for Dive Walks- they are coming your way!

Ally’s Class:

Anchor & Gravity (WCS)

All Levels

Dive into the foundations & footwork responsible for that smooth, stretchy, connective magic of West Coast Swing. We will break apart the whip, studying the components separately and in conjunction, as well as explore techniques for grounding your weight and maintaining a steady center. Come to improve balance, control, and gooey communication with your partner.

Music & DJs

2024 APPLICATIONS FOR DJS WILL BE OPENED SOON!

See our talented DJs from last year below. Maybe you’ll see some familiar faces this year!

DJ Tenae Lew

Tenae has been obsessively dancing in and around Seattle for over a decade and has expanded her focus towards both DJing and organizing events. Historically, dancers have encountered Tenae’s sets at weekend fusion events all over the PNW, as well as regular fusion and micro venues. Never one to play a song she doesn't love to dance to, Tenae's DJ style is rooted in music often found in the wee-hours of the night, with an ear for micro-licious elements, deep, driving beats, and artists whose creations give you goosebumps. While not adhering to a particular genre of music, Tenae's goal is to offer sets whose rising and falling movements are felt within the dancers' connection to each other, in deep, tender darkness.

DJ Rémy baheux

This is Remy and he likes to party. DJing and doing all sorts of stuff for fusion for 12+ years in the PNW, he's excited to bring his experience and his love of partying to Hot Night Fusion.

DJ Kadence

Sharon Koon, aka DJ Kadence, started DJing professionally as well as social dancing 23 years ago. She first discovered east coast swing and salsa, followed by blues, bachata, fusion, and Brazilian zouk. Her diverse DJ career began on-air and led to special events and social dances. Currently, DJ Kadence is best known throughout Colorado for her DJ skills in fusion, blues, and Brazilian zouk. Her trademark style is bass-laden, lush, emotional, and original, often creating her own edits and mashups.

DJ RIngo Sanchez

Ringo’s dancing and musical addiction started over 10 years ago with Ballroom, Latin, Swing and everything else he could find and move his feet to! That is until he found the very rich and amazing fusion scenes in Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay area, and there was no looking back! He curates his sets with hopes of taking you on a journey that will have you both grooving to high energy beats, and melting into ooey gooey micro!

DJ Pomona Lake

Pomona does her best to channel the party gods when she DJs, making offerings of blues, soul, funk, r&b, jazz and hip hop to the floor. Her unbridled hype and wildly varied musical palette create dancefloors that transcend the boundaries of decade and genre.

DJ Adin Van DUyne

1 year into dancing, Adin was given a binder of swing CDs from his cousin and thus unknowingly began his DJ career. His love of music from a young age made learning to DJ engaging and fun. Ever since he has strived to craft engaging sets on the fly that keep the floor packed from start to finish, be it high energy party thumpin' tunes or some late night downtempo flow. He especially enjoys finding and sharing new music, so expect a portion of every set he plays to be music he's never DJed before.

DJ Tony

DJ Ally Yancey

Ally began their love affair with DJing Fusion at house parties in 2007, and has been obsessed ever since. From local weekly venues in PDX to exchanges along the West Coast and throughout Europe, they have found a satisfaction behind the DJ booth that's become quite special to them. They are always seeking to find just the right song that, in a moment, can turn dancers into wild things—roaring their terrible roars and gnashing their terrible teeth and rolling their terrible eyes and showing their terrible claws.

Travel

Flying Into Denver

The nearest major airport to Denver is the Denver International Airport (DIA). DIA is a stylish, up-to-date facility receiving all popular airlines. You can find deals at respective discount airfare sites or directly from your preferred airline. We suggest checking fares often and signing up for low fare alert services. Research shows that the ideal time to buy your airline tickets is generally about 54 days before travel. After 54 days, prices begin to rise and then shoot up 30 days before the flight. Remember to check out package discounts for hotels and car rentals, if you wish. Here are some sites you can use to find deals and set up price alerts:

Competing at international events such as Camp Hollywood and the International Lindy Hop Championships, AJ became well known for his generous use of aerials paired with his energetic dancing.
AJ has also had the honor of performing on stage for the debut run of "SW!NG OUT" in addition to dance groups such as HellaBlackLindyHop and the Midtown Stompers, along with the privilege to spread his love of dance through teaching at Lindy Hop events across the US, on a Carnival Cruise ship, and overseas in countries such as Denmark and Sweden.

Sunday night band

Ian Hutchison's Colorado Band

Ian Hutchison knows how to play swing music for swing dancers. His propulsive bass playing has made toes tap all over the world for the last 15 years. He has led bands at dances throughout New York City and Colorado. A consummate sideman, Ian has played swing events in North America, Europe, and South Korea with such band leaders as Gordon Webster, Naomi Uyama, Jonathan Stout, Glenn Crytzer, and Eyal Vilner. Ian is also the bass player in the hit touring lindy hop show SW!NG OUT. When he's not playing, Ian enjoys social dancing and DJing. Ian spent 10 years as an in-demand bass player in Colorado before moving to New York City in 2014.

DJs

These folks are bringing you sweet tunes to keep the dancing going all weekend.

Allison Frey

Allison (she/they) grew up playing piano, violin, and soccer, and didn't start dancing until a study abroad trip to India in college. She fell in love with an ancient temple dance form, pursuing instruction on her own outside of study abroad courses. Allison was able to write about this dance in her Master's thesis when she returned to the states - there happened to be an incredible Odissi teacher at the same university, allowing her to both research and practice.

Allison entered the Lindy Hop community in 2014 and has organized, taught, choreographed, performed, DJed, competed...and done a lot of research! Being a musician and a music-lover has helped DJing emerge as a particular interest and talent. Allison enjoys crossing eras and genres that make Lindy Hoppers want to move and groove, appreciating the full spectrum of Black American music. Allison has DJed locally for weekly dances and events, as well as online events like the Global Online Social and Swing DJ Relay.

Leea Kuronen

Competition DJ

Leea started dancing when she was just 6-years old. She had been begging her parents to enroll her to ballet classes, and finally they gave in. After a few years of ballet training Leea wanted to explore other dance styles, so she picked up hip hop, and later, street dance, show dance (theatrical jazz dance), and later returned to adult ballet. In 2013 Leea signed up for Lindy hop classes and immediately fell in love with the dance form. She soon dived deeper into vernacular jazz and started learning blues, balboa, and solo jazz. Leea has been teaching and DJing since 2015. She's currently teaching as well as choreographing and performing vernacular jazz dances in the Denver metro area.

Stephanie Quon

Stephanie (she/her) fell in love with Lindy Hop ever since she started dancing in 2015. However, it wasn't until the pandemic, specifically at the online Boulder Swing Radio Hours, that she started DJing. That experience was great preparation and practice - she developed an even greater love and appreciation for jazz music and how it inspires the dance overall. Since then, Stephanie has had the opportunity to DJ for dancers in person at local scenes and events in Colorado and is excited to share a variety of her favorite swing music as you dance the night away.

Kara Fabina

(She/Her)

One thing that you can count on from this DJ is a vast understanding of genres. Because of her background in various dance styles, Kara brings a depth of musical knowledge appropriate for dancing. Her loves vary from House to Funk, Old School Hip Hop, Vintage Jazz, Blues and Soul. She has a not so secret adoration for mashups, and has even dabbled in beat production and mixology. With a desire to be a jill of all trades, she began Dj’ing at house parties in 2011. Since then she has gone on to DJ at local dance venues and events throughout the country. Based in Colorado Springs, she works to provide dancers with a variety of blues, jazz, and swing music in her sets. She is particularly excited to be DJing the Soul Party at Sunday’s late night again this year!

Miranda Lank

Miranda’s love for jazz began at a young age listening to records and watching old movie musicals. Her early collection of jazz music helped her meet the need for DJs at her local dance scene in South Carolina, and it quickly fueled a passion for finding songs to inspire dancers to hit the floor. Since then, she has livened up dance venues from the Southeast to New England and now calls Colorado home. She has a knack for finding the feeling of the room and playing to it as if it was tailored for each individual dancer, and she can’t wait to do the same for you.

2024 Swing Battle!

Prepare for battle!

The Swing Battle invites ALL AGES to gather, learn, have some fun in friendly competition - and most importantly - have a blast social dancing! Competitors and attendees range from dancers that just started to those with years of experience. We offer a team competition (our main event!), individual competitions, dance lessons from world-class instructors, and social dances with live music. And hey! This event is open to the public! Yes! It is a community event open to all, not just college students, so come show your support and share your love of swing dancing with our next generation.

RSVP to our Facebook Event!

This year’s event is a special collaboration between Boulder Swing Dance & CMDance!

All pass and ticket options will be available at the door!

Student passes are for currently enrolled students and will need to show valid ID when checking in or will be upgraded to a public pass.

There is a very limited amount of online discounted pre-sale tickets!
Once sold out, you may purchase at the door only!

Thank you for your continued support. Attendance to our events (besides being a fun time for you!) supports our school programming, student showcase, student teams, volunteers, organizers, and the instructors, performers, and musicians we employ.

Instructors

Instructors for 2024

Karen Hopkins (AZ), Dabney Hopkins (AZ)

Classes will be open (no level checks or tryouts) and beginner to intermediate levels geared towards those dancing 6 months up to 4 years.

Karen and Dabney (along with their children Alice and Joe) collectively make The Lindy Hopkins. Lindy Hopping their way through every adventure they take since they started partnering in 2010! Together they have taught across the United States,  perform regularly with bands in Arizona, California, and Nevada, were resident performers at The Cosmopolitan Chandelier Bar with Electro Swing Club, produce 3 annual weekend events complete with competitions and “licentious” social dancing until all hours of the night, and more. In 2020 Karen and Dabney were honored to be recognized by the Arizona Dance Coalition for their contributions to the dance community through the “Creating Connections Award” and they have been honored to be part of the elite group of dancers inducted into the Camp Hollywood Hall of Fame.

Nick Peterson

Nick started dancing in 1998 but he has been writing in the third person for much longer.

He once performed decently in competitions, but you’d need a VHS player to see them.

He teaches vintage swing and soul in Las Vegas.

heather ballew

Heather Ballew hails from Denver, Colorado where majestic mountains tower over the skyline and sunny days are plentiful. As a participant of the 1990's swing revival she has seen swing dance styles and techniques vary and evolve a lot over the years. In the classroom she strives to help her students be successful on the social floor but her ultimate goal is to open up new avenues for creativity and communication within the partnership. She loves dancing with people of all levels and she is known for her connection, footwork and playfulness. She can be found teaching around the United States and abroad, talking passionately about scene-building, and starting silly and sometimes thoughtful online discussions.

Contests

Music

MUSIC

Live Band Saturday Night: Jeremy Mohney & His Band!

Competition DJ Miranda Lank

Miranda’s love for jazz began at a young age listening to records and watching old movie musicals. Her early collection of jazz music helped her meet the need for DJs at her local dance scene in South Carolina, and it quickly fueled a passion for finding songs to inspire dancers to hit the floor. Since then, she has livened up dance venues from the Southeast to New England and now calls Colorado home. She has a knack for finding the feeling of the room and playing to it as if it was tailored for each individual dancer, and she can’t wait to do the same for you.

DJ Felicia Bode

Felicia was born into loving music, and you can see that in her DJ'ing. From middle school through college, she played alto and tenor saxophone for multiple ensembles and jazz bands, and listens for quality musicianship in what she plays during dances. Felicia has DJ'ed for multiple venues all over Ohio and Colorado, and has been dancing for 20 years herself, so knows what to play to keep a dance floor grooving! She can't wait to spin some tunes for you at Swing Battle this year.

DJ Timothy bentele

Having grown up listening to and playing jazz, Timothy was intrigued when they discovered Lindy Hop at Colorado School of Mines. The dance seemed like a wonderful pairing with their already broad knowledge of and love for the music, and he found that the movements flowed naturally from his existing sense of rhythm. Timothy quickly became ingrained in the community and started leading Mines' swing team the following year. Since graduating, Timothy has devoted time to digging up fresh music, both new and old, and has used that vast collection to DJ in the Denver community for Lindy and fusion. They are excited to return to ICSB this year and provide some awesome late night vibes.

Travel

Flying Into Denver international airport

The nearest major airport to Denver is the Denver International Airport (DIA).

RTD Buses – For public transportation, our RTD buses and light rail system are an effective and inexpensive method of getting around Denver. Check out the RTD website for a helpful Trip Planner and more details on Denver public transit.

Bird Scooters are an efficient/affordable option to get around downtown. App download required.

Event Manager

Felicia Bode

Felicia's insight in both macro and micro aspects of situations along with her organizational skills naturally lead her to event organizing. During her college years, as president of multiple swing dance organizations, Felicia worked to connect students with the broader dance community by organizing classes and social dances at the school. Post-graduation, her work continued through the registered non-profit, The Cleveland Exchange, for 3 years, and Rock the Blues for 2 years. In conjunction with planning for these ongoing classes and private events in her hometown of Cleveland, OH, Felicia has managed and worked with a variety of venues, instructors, bands, and DJs. As a new event manager on board at CMDance, Felicia is excited to be bringing blues dancing back to Denver and continuing to foster the blues community here through the Shimmy Shakin' Blues events.

Odysseus Bailer

Odysseus is a New York City based lindy hopper and blues dancer, instructor, cultural lecturer, DJ and has been involved in the dance scenes for over 20 years. He is excited and honored to be teaching at this year’s Diversion dance event, along side one of the world’s greatest, Katrina Rodgers. Odysseus’s teaching style has transformed over the years to teach more than just dance steps, patterns and idioms to weave and include the values, practices, social context and cultural understandings behind the music and dance that continues to come out of Black American Culture. He is excited to help us all get a better understanding of the culture and a better understanding of ourselves within the dance..

Katrina Rogers

Music and dancing are food for Katrina's soul. She feels the music on a very deep level and her body simply responds. Dancing has always been and will continue to be a place for Katrina loves to explore and express who she is, and she encourages everyone to do the same. She took her first Blues dance lesson in 2013 and found a piece of herself she never knew was missing. She is dedicated to learning and promoting the rich culture and history of this beautiful black art form. As a dancer, with a strong connection to musicality, she brings joy, emotion, fun, tons of sass and plenty of ridiculousness into her dances (nothing is off limits.) Katrina especially loves to play in her partnerships and wants to see what you’re bringin’-lets Riff! She has a special love of Blues with that Funky vibe (it totally compliments her quirkiness) and anything with that deep groove with high energy. You’ll find Katrina teaching and dj'ing up and down the front range and even nationally. She is committed to blending sounds and rhythms from various artists, regions and eras to keep people dancing the night away.

Lindy hop

Andrea Gordon

Andrea Gordon is a social dancer's dancer and comedian. Lover of music, rhythm, and connection, Andrea started dancing in 2006 when the lindy hop world looked much different than today, culturally and aesthetically. As a Frankie Manning Ambassador, Andrea quickly found her developing style rooted in a pulse, feeling, and groove, honoring the values of herself and Black Americans—values she deeply felt from hearing the recollections of the celebrated legends of the Savoy Ballroom.

Unwilling to ignore the challenges Black dancers faced in the dance, Andrea took a hiatus until 2020, when she stepped onto the floor for the first time in six years. Change was in the air. It reinvigorated her passion for the dance and Andrea soon began teaching on her home floor, Atomic Ballroom in Irvine, with her best friend and dance partner, Matt Richey as well as teaching and emceeing at local and national events. She's so excited to help make space for others to feel at home in this cultural dance.

LINDY HOP

Matt Richey

In 2011 Matt started dancing West Coast Swing and knew this dance was just the added excitement he needed.  Soon after, he started dancing in the showcase division and brought home trophies.
Over the years, Matt has won hundreds of titles in multiple styles of swing, including West Coast Swing, Lindy Hop and Balboa. He is becoming the most recognized crossover dancer in the circuit as well as being a familiar face on the social dance floor everywhere! In 2018 Matt was inducted to the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame. As much as Matt loves swing dancing, he loves teaching and sharing his love for dancing and music just as much! He currently teaches adults and kids in several local schools and studios in Orange County.
He is known for fun loving energy, musicality, showmanship and performance.

Romeo Wong Henderson

Romeo is all about diversity, from his Amazonian roots to vernacular rhythm and blues. Coming from a multicultural background and having lived in 3 different countries, he perceives the world in a different way. His profound connection and inquisitiveness with music led him to a Lindy Hop party in 2009. This began a journey that brought this sense of shared joy and community. He actively participated in several competitions between Argentina & Brazil from 2010 to 2017 and France in 2023. His journey as a videographer and photographer has woven a rich tapestry of connections with musicians and dancers worldwide, creating a global kinship.

SWING DJ - friday late night speakeasy

Miranda Whiting

Miranda’s love for jazz began at a young age listening to records and watching old movie musicals. Since then, she has livened up dance venues from the Southeast to New England and now calls Colorado home. She has a knack for finding the feeling of the room and playing to it as if it was tailored for each individual dancer, and she can’t wait to do the same for you.

Class Descriptions

All classes are in the same venue and running simultaneously. You can switch between styles but we ask that you stick with a class instead of switching 15-20 minutes in as material in a class is built off of the first 15 minutes.

FRIDAY NIGHT Lindy Hop w/Andrea & Matt
Intro Swing Class:
It’s All Swing!

You don't have to be married to lindy hop. It's more fun when "It's complicated".

FRIDAY NIGHT Blues w/Odysseus & Katrina
Intro Blues Class:
Understanding the Foundations, to Later Break the Rules

Foundation is key to everything we do in life. If you want to be a dynamic dancer in all its facets. It begins with how well you understand and embody the foundation(s) of the dance.

FRIDAY NIGHT Talk w/Erica Brown
"Blues, Jazz, and Dance: We ARE the Village!" A conversation with Erica Brown and Friends!”

SATURDAY Lindy Hop w/Andrea & Matt

Missed Connections
Partner dancing requires connection. If no one looks for it, or only one person feels it, you might as well get a bunch of hepcats from your local jazz shelter, because you're going to do solo jazz forever.

SATURDAY Lindy Hop w/Andrea & Matt

Pad Thai Berets
Ballet is fancy; jazz ain't. They go together like Pad Thai berets.

SATURDAY Lindy Hop w/Andrea & Matt

Sharing Vibes
How to allow the tone, style, and sub-genre of the music seep into your dancing to add the texture, weight, and depth that may be missing from your dancing.

SATURDAY Soft Shoe Tap w/Juan

Taking a Chance on Love
(
No tap shoes required. Leather shoes strongly recommended.) An introduction to the classic slow soft shoe routine, created by the legendary jazz tap dancers Honi Coles and Cholly Atkins. Nonchalantly stylish, this routine smoothly combines strolls, turns and slides in crystal cut precision.

SATURDAY Blues w/Katrina and Odysseus

All-Levels Go With the Flow - Savoy Walk
Learn to maintain your coolness while in line of dance. We will teach you two rhythm patterns to explore. In addition, learn turns, how to get in and out of the promenade seamlessly while adding playfulness into your partnership.

SATURDAY Blues w/Katrina and Odysseus

It's All about Timing- Fundamental Concept
We talk about rushing the beat or finding the beat, however, once we start moving it's really easy to lose it in your body. This class is all about helping you to feel and be in time with the music so you never feel lost. Set your dance up for success right from the very beginning.

SATURDAY Blues w/Katrina and Odysseus

Hit the Hits - Do the breaks keep passing you by?

Are you not sure exactly what to do? Well there is not a “one size” fill all approach to hitting the hits. In this class we will introduce you to several techniques to help you recognize when the moments are coming in the music, so you can capitalize on it.

SATURDAY Special Lecture w/Odysseus

How are Lindy Hop and Blues Black American Cultural Music and Dance Forms?
This talk is to help you understand and appreciate that Black American Culture is more than just the music and the dance that has continued to come out of Black American Communities. We will dive in to understand how the music and dance helps tell the story of us as a people.

SUNDAY Lindy Hop w/Andrea & Matt

SPECIAL 90-Minute Intensive
”Watch - Copy - Complement”
Learn fun ways to work with your partner in your social dancing. Show appreciation, admiration, and encouragement, while moving your own feet.

SUNDAY Blues w/Katrina and Odysseus

SPECIAL 90-Minute INTENSIVE
”Creative Spins-off on Classic Moves - Creativity & Self Expression “

How to personalize the classic idioms dances like the Mooche, Low-downs, 4-corner, grinds, or fishtails to your body type and desired self-expression regardless of tempo or style of music.. How you doin’ rule breaker?

SUNDAY Swing & Lindy Hop w/ Juan

SPECIAL 2-Hour Swing INTENSIVE
Join us for a dynamic 2-hour session where we dive into the heart of swing dancing, exploring the essential concepts of "time keeping," "accents," "swing & syncopation," "musical phrasing," and "interpretation."

1. Rhythm Is Our Business: In the first part of the class, immerse yourself in the world of rhythm variations. Learn how to master and apply intricate rhythmic patterns into your dancing, creating personalized footwork and swing-out variations. Discover the art of syncing your movements with the melody, hitting the breaks with precision, and incorporating rhythmic ideas to elevate your dance.

2. "Dancers Don't Need to Know More Steps, They Need To Know More Songs": Building on the foundation of rhythm, the second part of our class focuses on the importance of repertoire in dance. Understand how your dance repertoire can serve as a powerful tool to "illustrate" any song with your movement. Explore the connection between steps and musical expression, discovering how to seamlessly integrate your dance vocabulary with the nuances of different songs.

Location: The Savoy Denver

2700 Arapahoe St, Denver, CO 80205

The Savoy Denver occupies the second floor of a landmark Victorian building. Built in 1889 and residing in the historic Curtis Park Neighborhood, the second floor was used as a private social club with a dance floor/social space, lobby, and lounge. Today, it remains as one of the few surviving spaces of its kind in the city of Denver.

A short walk from Coors Field, adjacent to the RiNo Arts and Entertainment District, the building was renovated in 2020. In 2012 the second floor was restored to its original configuration with original pressed tin ceilings and illuminated by nine-foot windows that offer city views.

Denver Vintage Jazz Festival is THREE days of world-class music held in the Mile-High City of Denver, Colorado.

This early-era throwback party appeal is unrivaled in Denver located in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Our one-of-a-kind Vintage festival focuses primarily on vintage jazz and blues of the 1920’s, 1930’s & 1940’s. Each venue features a spacious dance floor, and there are workshops, classes and lectures available from internationally renowned instructors during the daytime hours through our sister event Lindy on the Rocks & Rocky Mountain Balboa Blowout.

We mix in locals along with top name bands, to help bolster the local music economy, and employ/educate local musicians on playing this style of music.

COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS - Based on guidelines from the CDC, state authorities, and local guidelines, this event is now a VACCINATED ONLY event and MASKS will be REQUIRED at all indoor venues. COVID

We've been hard at work and discussing many constantly changing variables, and are continuing to meet weekly to address the challenges of holding a dance event with safety in mind. Previously, we had announced a vaccination only policy at our event and we want to continue to communicate the other precautions that are integral to our event.

If you are sick, do not attend.

If you have been in contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID19, kindly get a negative test before attending our events.

Vaccinated Only - Required Proof

We are requiring proof of being fully vaccinated via a vaccination card (either physically or digitally/picture) to be verified by our team before allowing entry to our event. No exceptions.

People are considered fully vaccinated 2 weeks after their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, or 2 weeks after the single-dose Johnson & Johnson's Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. Meaning you will have to have received your second dose of Pfizer or Moderna shot OR your single shot of Janssen by Thursday, September 2nd, 2021! Any vaccination cards incomplete or after listing shots after that date do not qualify.

We have checked many options for processing your vaccination cards pre-event to better streamline the check-in process. If you are able to, please send a photo of your vaccination card and a photo ID to our e-mail EVENTS@CMDANCE.ORG.

Our team will cross check and update our check-in process ahead of time. We still strongly advise you to bring the physical card or a photo as many businesses and places are now asking for proof, and it's always good to have bring it in case there is a technology error.

Masks Required

Due to the increasing rates of transmission, the increasing risks of the new COVID-19 variants, and directives from the CDC/State guidance, CMDance, Lindy on the Rocks & Rocky Mountain Balboa Blowout will require masks indoors at the event. As you already know, all public forms of transportation including ride shares currently require the use of masks. We will still have additional masks available on site.

Venues with quality ventilation

Studio Loft & McNichols buildings are run by the City of Denver. The City has gone above and beyond the CDC guidelines for air quality and cleanliness. Most city buildings were Denver 5 star certified while the program lasted and still maintain all practices and more to be qualified for the program. Signage is posted in areas, hand sanitizer in multiple locations around the building, only Hepa filters are used for the HVAC, as well as pumping outside air in at all times, while pushing inside air back out of the building. The facilities get cleaned numerous times a day and all high touch areas are cleaned and wiped down by the hour. All Covid-19/Variant precautions are used to maintain the building, staff, and patrons at all times. The Denver Turnverein has high ceilings, air filters cycling to clean the air, hand sanitizer and posted signage.

Free PPE readily available

Our team will have individual hand sanitizers and masks available for free to all attendees.

More lenient refund policy

We want to encourage everyone to make the best decision for themselves and their community. CMDance is extending their refund policy to August 31st for anyone needing to change their decision to attend. Starting September 1st, we will prioritize pushing your registration onto an event of your choice in 2022 over refunds. If you get sick leading up to or during the event, please stay home or isolate immediately. Don't hesitate to reach out about a refund or pushing registration onto an event next year.

We understand that these changes to our policies may alter your plans to attend the Lindy on the Rocks & Rocky Mountain Balboa Blowout. We will be as flexible as possible regarding your decision. Please reach out to info@cmdance.org with any questions or concerns related to attending the LOTR/RMBB event, and our enhanced COVID19 related protocols.

We are working as hard as possible to make this year’s event an incredible and memorable experience that you have grown to love.

CMDance has worked with hundreds of artists worldwide, and is looking forward to the day when we can get back to dancing together.

Our fundraising goal this season of $35,000 is to directly support the Colorado school dance and movement programming, which also provides employment for local artists. The Colorado school program has been in place since 1999, and reaches thousands of children each year. Please donate and help us reach this goal to provide valuable arts education to the youth in our community. In these stressful times, dancing not only brings joy to children's lives, but provides a healthy approach to process emotions while strengthening their brains to grow resiliently

Community-Minded Dance is pleased to bring artists from across the globe to Denver to talk, teach, dance, and inspire.

deandre.jpg

DeAndre Carroll

DeAndre Carroll is well versed in many African-American dances. His knowledge of the Diaspora dances and contemporary dance styles give him a unique ability to teach movement and history. DeAndre is the artistic producer of the Funkinetic Project and runs the Disciples of Funk based in Denver. He focuses on building and developing communities through the power of dance.

Jesica Cutler

Jesica is a trained massage therapist, as well as a teacher of Tango, Lindy Hop and Blues. She employs her extensive anatomical and dance knowledge to analyze movement and help her students better understand the mechanics of their own bodies.

She has been dancing and teaching Tango with John Miller since 2012, and in that time have developed a teaching style that is fun, accessible, and precise. They have an easy rapport with students, extensive knowledge of technique and structure, and superb understanding of body mechanics and movement.

devon.jpg

Devon Near-Hill

Devon Near-Hill is a teaching and performing artist currently based in Northern California. Her movement background includes bellydance, ballet, salsa, and modern dance. Devon fell in love with lambada and Brazilian Zouk five years ago and has since been exploring its depths. As an advocate for understanding the roots of a dance, she made the pilgrimage to Rio De Janeiro to perform with Renata Pecanha’s company and complete her teacher training program, learned from Braz Dos Santos in his 50-hr teacher training in Key West, trained and toured with Mestre Gilson Damasco, and deeply immersed herself in the school Renata Pecanha USA directed by Cristi and Clinton. She won first place in the first ever lambada competition at New York City Zouk Festival and second place in the LA Zouk Festival Semipro US Zouk Open competition as the first female lead to ever compete. Devon produced & hosted LA’s only Lambada & Zouk social, ENERGIA in 2018. That same year she began collaborating with Jerry Lai to continue expanding his pedagogy, Deconstructing Zouk with the goal of creating versatile and connected dancers. To cultivate freedom of movement and safety in social dance for followers, Devon also created The Efficient Follow curriculum. Together Devon & Jerry went on tour to teach both programs in London, Washington DC, Warsaw, Paris, and are now teaching online! Devon recently became certified as a Judge for the Brazilian Zouk Council and scored her first intermediate competition in January. Devon’s goal is to use information from multiple modalities to create well-rounded and informed dancers who move from the inside out. She is so excited to share with you!

Irina Amzashvili

Dancing has always been a passion for Irina, her expression completely and boundlessly inspired by music. She began learning Lindy Hop in 2009 at the age of 15 and fell in love with it after her first night of social dancing.

Shortly thereafter, her passion for Swing dancing expanded to include Balboa, Collegiate Shag, and solo Jazz. Since her start in Orange County, CA, Irina has taught these dances all across the U.S. as well as Europe, Asia, and Australia.

As a teacher her goal is to patiently guide her students through building solid foundations and technique as well as inspiring individuality in personal movement. Irina's greatest joy as a teacher is to see her students progress with their dancing, no matter the increment.

irina.jpg
Anthony.jpg

Anthony Chen

Anthony first started dancing at age 8 when his parents convinced him to learn and perform Chinese lion dances. As a young teenager he stumbled upon breakdancing, which kept him out of trouble until he found his true love in swing. Since then, he has trained in other dance styles ranging from hip-hop to West Coast Swing, but most of all he enjoys using this background to expand upon his technique and creativity in Lindy Hop. On the social dance floor he is known to be playful, musical, creative, and clear. He holds first place titles from events such as Lindyfest and Lone Star Championships, Montreal Swing Riot, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, Lindy Focus, and International Lindy Hop Championships. Combined with his professional background in education, his love of both leading and following have been instrumental to making the classes that he teaches both clear and intuitive. He is an active scene builder in his community and founded Salt City Swing, where he teaches locally.

Dr. Marie N’diaye

Dr. Marie N'diaye (PhD) is a Jazz Dance choreographer, performer and educator as well as a dance researcher.

She specializes in Jazz Dance (African American Vernacular Jazz) and its partnered form (Lindy Hop), focusing on the legacy of Harlem dancers from the Savoy Ballroom as well as the chorus line tradition from night clubs and theaters (such as the Apollo Theater, the Cotton Club, Connie's Inn...) and has applied her scientific method and dance education to conduct an embodied practice-based research of Jazz dance through the study of original video clips and collaborations with established dancers.

Classes

Origins of Movement w/ Jesica Cutler

Float like a jellyfish, stand like a mountain. Experience movement through bone stacking and 360 breathing. These foundational skills are essential for all dancers and movers of any discipline.

Origins of Brazilian Zouk w/ Devon Near-Hill

From its origins in Afrodiasporic dances, to it's borrowing from Brazilian ballroom dance, salsa, merengue (and others), to the appropriation of Caribbean Zouk music, Brazilian Zouk is truly a fusion dance! Join Devon for a journey through movement guided by story and music. This class will cover timing, the evolution of head movement, and lead up to a few sequences characteristic to what we know as traditional Brazilian Zouk today.

A New Spin On An Old Connection, pt. 1 & 2 w/ Anthony Chen & Irina Amzashvili

Here we will build off of your connection and stretch fundamentals to create new variations and explore a less well-known side of your dancing. Partner required, intermediate and up.

Women in Jazz w/ Dr. Marie N’diaye

Women have been as much a part of the Story of Jazz dance as men but they have achieved much less recognition. In this talk we will present notable but also less well known jazz dancers.

CMDance is hosting events on both Zoom and Vimeo. Please ensure you have the most up to date versions of both in order to participate.

Hot Nights of 2020!

Once a month, a diverse community of people get together to share their love of tango and blues dancing and music.

Experience the dance and discover your story

Experience the dance and discover your story

What is a Hot Night?

The Hot Night is Caryn Carrrasco’s idea, our founder.  As a lifelong dancer in many styles, she wanted a place where people could just dance and focus on innovation rather than moves that are “officially” part of a particular dance.

What is Fusion?

What is Fusion? Fusion /ˈfyo͞oZHən/ Noun: The process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity. Is it relates to dance, fusion could most easily be summed up as follows: What happens when you take multiple dance influences and dance them to music that isn’t necessarily the “traditional” choice for those movements. Doing a Baleo in Blues Dance is fusion, an open position transition in Tango is Fusion.

For Newer Dancers:

This is a great way to try more than one dance in a night and see what you like.  Find music that makes you want to dance.  Find a bridge from what you listen to, to the music that grew up with the dances.

Dance with people who are laid-back and not hung up on what dance you “should” do to music.  This is a chance to dance as you as possible and have a great time doing it.

For Advanced Dancers:

Come to Hot Night and stretch your dancing muscles.  Do Volcada with a Blues dancer, send a tango dancer into open.  Try a dance and music that is outside your same-old, same-old set of moves.  Then, when you feel it, pop back into your comfort zone and surprise the person you’re dancing with.  Hot Nights are a great way to bust that dance rut you’ve been getting into.

Volunteers

Teamwork makes the dream work!

Volunteers are the face of the event, as each of you are often the first human anyone interacts with and comes to with emergencies. We value our volunteers and seriously cannot function without you. Help us make this a successful event, and get to know your organizers and artists a little better. You will be able to sign-up after reading the following!

Volunteers can assist with this event to help offset the purchase price of your individual pass. Each hour you assist is equivalent to $10 off of your purchase price. Time slots are limited so this option is first come first serve.* Please fill out the following if you would like to volunteer: Volunteer Registration
(*If the price of attending is financially challenging please let us know, we will prioritize your registration for volunteer hours.)

Important Notes Related to Volunteering:

  • PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER/BUY A PASS, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER IN EXCHANGE FOR A PASS! If you just want to help out because we are a community, that’s cool too.

  • As you have not pre-registered, you must provide a check as a deposit for the full amount at the beginning of the weekend. This deposit is in good faith that you will show up for all your shifts, and communicate with all the appropriate personnel if you swap a shift.

  • The check will be destroyed when all your commitments are fulfilled, or if you do not show up for your shifts then you choose to have CMDance cash your check in exchange for your pass. You may write a new check or paypal CMDance the difference in the case you miss/are late.

  • In the case that you do not have checks because you think they are outdated, then we may be able to set-up a case by case alternative to the check from of a deposit.

  • Volunteers will have the choice to work part-time for a dance pass (or half off their all-access pass), or you can volunteer full-time for their pass.

  • CMDance will not refund any dollar amount above what you paid for your event pass, in the instance you have already purchased your pass.

  • Volunteers will be offered to pick their shifts in the first stages of volunteer sign-up, but it will be locked for editing as we get closer to the event.

  • Volunteers who are no shows for shifts will not be allowed to volunteer for CM Dance events in the future. (This would suck, please don’t make us use this)

  • We will accept your volunteer support and helping hands at any time, even when you are not scheduled, of course!

  • Volunteers are really cool and make this event amazing! Thank you.

Krystal Wilkerson

Krystal loves living in Huntsville, Alabama, although she is originally from southern Ohio. She has an uncanny energy and enthusiasm for blues music and dancing, and can often be seen at events all over the southeast and the US. She’s been partner dancing various styles since 2007; Blues stole her heart, however, in 2010, and has never let go.

She has taught all over the US, ranging from small community -focused events all the way up to national events such as Blues Muse, Blues Geek, and the Blues Experiment. She’s a fierce competitor, frequently making finals at national blues dance contests, and brings her fervor for connection into all of her dancing and instruction. Her love of the dance is contagious, and she believes in injecting fun into all of her classes.

Adam Wilkerson

Adam is proud to call Huntsville, Alabama home, but he's originally from Mississippi. He’s been partner dancing since 2004, starting in Ballroom, Latin street dances, and Lindy Hop, but he followed Krystal into blues in 2010, and it’s been his primary focus ever since. He’s passionate about social dancing and blues music, and loves to explore all different blues styles in his instruction and setlists. He strongly believes in teaching the context and history of the music and the dance, focusing on research in the Mississippi Delta in his spare time. His analytical approach to connection and value for intuition in dance provides a unique classroom environment that promotes self-awareness and improvement beyond the classroom. He believes in learning through experience and experimentation, so expect a LOT of getting up and dancing in his classes.

Matthew Pait

Matthew Pait is an avid jazz musician turned Lindy hopper from the age of fifteen. His passion for authentic jazz movement has carried him through over a decade of instructing, mentoring and performing for many nationally ranked teams. Matthew also spent 2 years as a scene leader and dance school developer during his residency in Germany. He had opportunities to teach throughout Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. After years of dabbling it was here that his love of tap was fully realized under the tutelage of World Champion Jutta Maas. He has since consumed the majority of his practice time on diversifying and developing his advanced tap skill that flows wonderfully into his effusive and musical dance style. His greatest tap influence and inspiration is Jimmy Slide. He looks forward to sharing his point of view with everyone at Lindy Diversion 2020!

Music

Friday - Joe Smith & The Red Hot Rhythm Rocket

Red Hot Rhythm Rocket A little bit of Rock and Roll, some Rhythm & Blues, a Hammond B3 Organ, and just a dash of swing is the recipe for some infectious groove set by the men and lady of the Red Hot Rhythm Rocket. Pulling inspiration from Louis Jordan, Etta James, Pearl Bailey, Bill Doggett, Milt Buckner, and Big Jay McNeely, among others, this band features two horns, organ, guitar, drums, and a strong vocalist. The band was started by Joe Smith in 2017 to provide an eclectic mix of music arranged to get people on the floor dancing.

Saturday - Josh Fialkoff and the Oddfellows

Joshua Fialkoff lends his smoky voice and unique piano stylings – a veritable gumbo of “roots piano” flavors – to dance exchanges and series around the world, and has been doing so for over ten years. Joshua first began playing for dancers as a bass player for Solomon Douglas. Later, as a pianist, he started his own group and began sharing his distinct brand of Blues and Swing. Joshua is known for his unique arrangements that are at once new and old, and an authenticity and rawness that shines through in his presence and performance.

Blues and Swing events throughout the US, Canada, and Europe regularly feature Joshua or one of his ensembles. Some recent performances include Spoonful (Edinburgh, UK), DCLX’tra (Washington DC), Dance Flurry (Saratoga Springs, NY), BluesSHOUT (Chicago, IL), Sweet Molasses Blues (Boston, MA), Eastside Stomp (Seattle, WA), Montreal Bagel and Blues (Montreal, QC), Capital Ballroom (Seattle, WA), Mean Old Blues (San Francisco, CA), and many others. He has shared the stage with a number of esteemed musicians including Gordon Webster, Barbara Morrison, and Meschiya Lake. Joshua is the rare performer who cares deeply about his audience, who is constantly seeking to connect and engage the people he plays for, and who yearns to instill in everyone within earshot an irresistible urge to move.

DJs

Kara Fabina (Colorado Springs)

One thing that you can count on from this DJ is a vast understanding of genres. Because of her background in various dance styles, Kara brings a depth of musical knowledge appropriate for dancing. Her loves vary from House to Funk, Old School Hip Hop, Vintage Jazz, Blues and Soul. She has a not so secret adoration for mashups, and has even dabbled in beat production and mixology. With a desire to be a jill of all trades, she began Dj’ing at house parties in 2011. Since then she has gone on to DJ at local dance venues and events throughout the world. Based in Colorado Springs, she works to provide dancers with a variety of blues, jazz, and swing music in her sets.

Adam Wilkerson

Adam is proud to call Huntsville, Alabama home, but he's originally from Mississippi. He’s been partner dancing since 2004, starting in Ballroom, Latin street dances, and Lindy Hop, but he fell in love with blues in 2010, and it’s been his primary focus ever since. He’s passionate about social dancing and blues music, and loves to explore all kinds of swing and blues styles in his setlists. He strongly believes in teaching the context and history of the music and the dance, focusing on research in the Mississippi Delta in his spare time. In the spirit of that, you'll be sure to hear plenty of blues from his home state in his sets! He absolutely loves jazz, though, so don't worry, he'll bring the swing!

Jonathan Neave

Jonathan started dancing Swing in Colorado Springs in 2015, and quickly fell completely in love with Lindy Hop by 2016. Since then, he's had the opportunity to learn from, dance with and be humbled by, the amazing people of the Colorado Springs and Denver area. Jonathan has been DJing swing in Colorado Springs for two years, he's always excited to keep the dance floor hoppin' with a variety of tunes, both modern and classic, that will be sure to keep you dancing until your feet fall off.

Lorne Fultonberg

After years of dancing Lindy Hop, Lorne Fultonberg finally realized the root of his addiction: the music, of course! Since, he has fallen in love with anything that swings, becoming a regular DJ at Boulder Swing and the Denver ShalBags while also making appearances at the Mercury Cafe and Scissortail Swing. Lorne's playful, groove-able sets reflect the musicality he so cherishes in his and his partners' dancing. He firmly believes you can never play enough Benny Goodman (especially his small groups) and has soft spots for Teddy Wilson, Nat King Cole, Fats Waller and Django Reinhardt. But he also believes in supporting and spinning the contemporary jazz groups keeping the classics alive.

Katrina Rogers

Music and dancing are food for Katrina's soul. She feels the music on a very deep level and her body simply responds. Dancing has always been and will continue to be a place for Katrina to explore and express who she is, and she encourages everyone to do the same. Katrina took her first Blues dance lesson in 2013 and found a piece of herself she never knew was missing. She is dedicated to learning and promoting the rich culture and history of this beautiful black art form. As a dancer, with a strong connection to musicality, she brings joy, emotion, fun, tons of sass and plenty of ridiculousness into her dances (nothing is off limits). Katrina especially loves to play in her partnerships and wants to see what you’re bringin’-lets Riff!. She has a special love of Blues with that Funky vibe (it totally compliments her quirkiness) and anything with that deep groove with high energy. In addition to being an instructor, you’ll find Katrina Djing up and down the front range. Committed to blending sounds and rhythms from various artists, regions and eras to keep people dancing the night away.

Aloura Summers Bio Pic.jpg

Aloura Summers

Aloura has been active in the Dance Scene in Denver for over 10 years, she found her place in the dance community when she was introduced to Blues dancing at the Mercury Cafe. She started hosting and DJing events regularly in 2016 and quickly fell in love with creating space for her communities to dance and connect on a deeper level. Aloura Teaches dance to preschoolers in the Head Start program through CMDance and teaches music and movement to the special needs community in Littleton. Her hope as she continues hosting and DJing events is to help inspire a new vibrant energy of connection, connection to the music, connection and access to high quality dance instruction, connection and fusion between dance styles, and connection to each other.

Class Descriptions

Beginner Friendly - We recommend that you have been dancing 6 months, and have been taking dance classes regularly. These are NOT introductory classes

Freestyle and Flow! (Saturday 11:00-12:00 Main Ballroom)
In this level we will focus on flow and freestyle, incorporating loops of basic moves, and simple freestyle ideas to improve your technique, creativity, and improvisation skills. Each class will focus on a different set of basic moves, and freestyle concepts.

Bouncing Vs. Ryhthm (Saturday 12:15-1:15 Main Ballroom)

These two words are often put together which can lead to the belief, "if I bounce, my rhythm will get better!". But let's look at the MOVEMENT (to bounce) and apply multiple different grooves to it so that we can give these two words more clarity.

Savoy walk (Saturday 12:15-1:15 Ratskellar)

Savoy Walk is an idiom closely tied to swing dancing. With techniques learned from Sugar and Norma, we'll provide some historical context to this dance the blends a cozy connection with moments of Exciting flash danced at the world-famous Savoy Ballroom!

Musician Focus (Saturday 2:30-3:30 Ratskellar)

Ballroomin' shares SO MUCH of its musical roots with swing dancing. To that end, come explore the music and history of Ella Fitzgerald with us during this hour. We'll give some nice introductions to musicality, along with a lot of really exciting facts about this amazing woman's life and art!

All Levels

Slow Dancing: More like SLOW MOTION dancing (Saturday 2:30-3:30 Main Ballroom)

A unique take on how Dax and Sarah approach swing dancing to slow music.

Jazz, Blues, and Jazz Blues (Saturday 3:45-4:45 Main Ballroom)

When the tempos get low, we may slow down, but that doesn't mean we lose our connection to swing. In this class, we'll talk about some classic Blues Dance moves that find a root in swing mechanics, and help you explore how to incorporate some of your Lindy into your Blues!

Lag and relaxation (Sunday 11:00-12:00 Main Ballroom)
Blues dancing is all about keeping your cool and making it look effortless. In this class, we'll explore some techniques to maintain relaxation in your dance, and work through some fun exercises to rethink the way you lag behind the beat and your partner!

Make Em Cry - Material is meant to be a more intricate look into technique and skill development

When Connection Hurts Your Dancing (Sunday 12:15-1:15 Main Ballroom)
CONNECTION, the thing we all strive to get good at. But what happens if your connection actually prevents you from achieving your goal to have a good dance? Let's evaluate these situations and shift our focus to the tools we need to achieve our goals.

Crafting a partnership (Sunday 12:15-1:15 Ratskellar)

Crafting a tight partnerships starts with your footsteps. In this class, we'll explore what it means to lead and follow precise foot placement and timing!

Microsliding To Achieve Good Movement (Sunday 2:30-3:30 Main Ballroom)

We've all seen (and maybe attempted) slides before. But what about micro-sliding? This incredibly, essential technique facilitates our goal to achieve good body movement and connection without a partner. So leave your sticky shoes in the room, and let's get (micro)sliding!

Flash in the ballroom (Sunday 2:30-3:30 Ratskellar)

Unlike the Blues Dances done in small juke joints, dancers in ballrooms had a lot of space to show their stuff! In this class, we'll work through a sequence of moves that captures the spirit of that flash, and get some cools spins into your ballroomin'!

Progressive Challenges (Sunday 3:45-4:45 Main Ballroom)

In this level we will progressively build a short combination adding more and spicier stylings and embellishments until students are no longer able to handle the heat.

Scholarship

We believe dance is a gift that should be accessible for everyone. We have seen first-hand and experienced the impact that dance can have on an individual’s life. Further, we have seen the personal and community growth that can occur in participants of a dance community.

Therefore we do not want financial hardship to prohibit students from participating in CMDance Events. At the same time, we recognize that our education immersion weekends are not for everyone. Families and individuals have various priorities, and a great diversity of talents to steward. We understand that dance may or may not fit into that picture for you or your family.

Our scholarships are primarily for those who consider dance to be a priority, yet after making personal sacrifices cannot afford the financial cost. If you believe you (or someone you know) fit this criteria, we welcome you to submit the scholarship application form for yourself or welcome you to nominate someone.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE DUE DECEMBER 1ST, 2019

Please read the following important notes before applying for a scholarship for yourself or someone else:

  1. Scholarships do NOT cover any portion of travel expenses, housing expense, or other travel expenses. In other words, you will need to be able to cover those fees on your own. If you are unable to do so, we recommend finding an outside sponsor (such as a friend or community member) who will agree to cover those costs. We do have housing request forms for out of town attendees. We will make our scholarship recipients a priority on housing accommodations, but housing is never guaranteed.

  2. Scholarships cover a portion of dance class tuition ranging from 25% to 100%. The portion is completely variable, depending on the unique situation. If you are awarded a partial scholarship, you will still be responsible for your reduced tuition rate, just like any regular attendee. Whatever your portion may be, if you are late you will forfeit your scholarship, and will no longer be eligible for the program if the balance is not paid in a timely manner.

  3. Only one scholarship application is needed per person.

  4. Only one scholarship per calendar year will be awarded to the same recipient. That means, that if you receive a scholarship for an event in February, then you are ineligible to receive another scholarship until March of the following year. You may still however volunteer at multiple events.

  5. Scholarships are awarded based on our sole opinion and discretion. This is a private event. There are many factors which may affect the availability of scholarships. Not everyone who applies will receive a scholarship.

  6. In addition to scholarship awards, we may consider bartering for certain services that would be beneficial to CMDance. (For example: advertising exposure, outreach, community engagement programs, sound/lighting help, photography, etc.) Again this is at our sole discretion, and there are only so many services we need so please do not take offense if we do not have need for your service at this time.

  7. We reserve the right to revoke scholarships at any time for any reason.

  8. We plan to have our decisions communicated by December 15th. If you do not hear from us in that time frame, please contact us. We may also contact you to get additional information. Kara@cmdance.org

  9. Please respect our decision. Awards are not open for negotiation, unless we are specifically bartering for a service you are providing.

Instructors

Sylvia Sykes

sylvia-199x300-199x300.jpg

An internationally recognized authority on several different forms of swing dance, Sylvia Sykes has lectured and taught dance workshops all over the world since 1985. She has competed in numerous dance competitions, appeared on television, been featured with orchestras such as Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and Count Basie, as well as being voted into the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame as well as the National Swing Dance Hall of Fame.

Sylvia studied Balboa with Maxie Dorf and spent years learning from the greatest Southern California Balboa dancers. She was also privileged to study Lindy Hop with Dean Collins, and was a member of his last dance troupe. Together with her original partner Jonathan Bixby, Sylvia was a six-time U.S. Open Finalist and two-time Southern California Balboa Champion. Sylvia is the driving force behind Balboa all over the world and has been for many years. She has played a major role in nurturing the growth of the All Balboa Weekend and we’re proud to have her back for a 9th consecutive year.

Nick Williams

nick-300x300.jpg

Nick Williams has embodied the passion and spirit of swing dancing ever since his first lesson in 1998. The depth of his understanding of Lindy Hop, Balboa, and Collegiate Shag stems from studying with the original dancers. Nick’s desire for authenticity, combined with his passion for dance evolution, leads to a style known for precision, lightness, musicality and dynamic energy.

His successes include World Lindy Hop Champion, US Open Swing Dance Champion, American Lindy Hop Champion, National Jitterbug Champion, International Lindy Hop Champion, Ultimate Lindy Hop Champion, American Classic Balboa Champion and California Balboa/Swing Champion. Nick was honored to be recognized by the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame. He is also an accomplished choreographer and has choreographed for the hit television show So You Think You Can Dance. As an instructor, he is known for his ability to break down movements and technique to create a fun and light-hearted learning environment. His true love of music and dancing will forever inspire him to learn, teach, and grow.

Kate Hedin

kate1-199x300.jpg

Following in the path of her great ancestor, Swedish explorer Sven Hedin, Kate has traveled to the greatest unknown regions of following and footwork. Aside from a love of classically inspired Lindy Hop, she is most known for her unique and elegant style of Balboa.

The result is an impressive resume. Kate holds championship titles in almost every major competition, including the American Classic Balboa Championships, the International Lindy Hop Championships, the Euro Balboa Cup, and more. She is also a highly sought-after competition judge. In 2012, she released two highly praised DVDs specifically for Balboa followers on technique and aesthetics. As a teacher, Kate is known and loved for her logic-based language, her unique methods of teaching technique, and, overall, never leaving student followers disappointed.

She is proud to have held, along with her friends at Get Hep Swing in Cleveland, the Guinness World Record for longest dance party ever (52 hours, 3 minutes). Her fashion is admired by many, her lines desired as far as the Orient. She also does trapeze.

David Rehm

David-Rehm-222x300.jpg

David Rehm is a geek-turned-professional-dancer specializing exclusively in the partnered swing dances, Lindy and Balboa, and widely considered one of the top Balboa dancers and instructors in the world. He is regularly featured teaching and judging at the most prestigious events dedicated to those dances throughout North America, Europe and Asia. In addition to numerous awards, in 2006 David captured both the American and European Balboa titles (with different partners) by winning the American Classic Balboa Championship and the Euro Bal Cup. He is also the creator of The Experiment, “the world’s most intimate and intensive Balboa workshop”, as well as the founder of the Northeast Balboa Corridor (NEBC) project. David is best known for his ability to capture both broad thematic abstractions and technical details all in the form of conceptual principles.

Laura Keat

lauraKeat.jpg

Laura began her swing dance career in Denver when she joined the award-winning Lindy Hop performance team, 23 Skidoo! She immediately developed a passion for the art of swing dancing. Ever the disciplined student and skilled competitor, Laura began winning national titles and gaining recognition as a championship lindy hop follow with an independent style and point of view.

She loves dancing with a wide variety of leads with diverse styles and ideas to challenge and broaden her own abilities as a follow. And as an instructor, she brings a fresh perspective towards developing each student’s technical foundation and individual style. For Laura, every dance is a chance to put smiles on peoples’ faces with an entertaining performance which shares and inspires the joy and excitement for swing dancing.

Jeremy Otth

jeremyOtth-200x302.jpg

Jeremy amassed a great amount of knowledge on the historic essence of vintage swing dances from many of the original jitterbugs and swing dancers. Along with his seemingly inexhaustible amount of energy, Jeremy’s natural talent and dedication led him to accumulate championship titles at many acclaimed dance competitions such as the International Lindy Hop Championships, National Jitterbug Championships, American Classic Balboa Championships and the US Open Swing Dance Championships.

Jeremy is now able to share that breadth of knowledge and passion for these classic partner dances by entertaining and educating feet from Southern California to around the world.

Olga Marina

Olga30%.jpg

Olga was born into a family of teachers (language and music) and since early years has been an energetic live wire – studying music, doing athletics, martial arts and gymnastics. In 2007 she was introduced to Lindy Hop and this is where the real passion story begins. She got dance hooked and started to explore more of the dance world by getting into Blues and later Balboa. She has been actively travelling the globe in pursuit of more opportunities to dance, learn and compete. Later she began to share her love for swing music and dance by teaching. At her classes Olga pays a lot of attention to getting the students interested and involved by giving challenging and fun tasks, working both on technique and musicality and infecting them even more with the passion for dancing.

Andreas Olsson

Andreas50%.jpg

Andreas Olsson lives in Stockholm, Sweden. He grew up on the wrestling mat, fighting other little boys in leotards. He won most of the time since he’s always given 100% in everything that he does. He also played the violin in an orchestra during his childhood. You might not think classical music and wrestling has much in common with Swing dancing, but it has definitely contributed to him becoming the unpredictable, creative, musical and interesting dancer he is today.

Andreas was introduced to Lindy Hop in 2001 and a few years later to Balboa. Andreas teaches dance because he loves to see students learn and improve. As Andreas sees it, teaching is inspiring since it offers a possibility to contribute to the ever-changing dance style and scene.

Andreas claims to be the unchallenged record holder (so far!) of most hours spent on social swing dance floors in Stockholm. He is an energizer bunny, and only takes a break to change into another colorful tie.

He has been placed in a number of prestigious competitions in both Lindy Hop and Balboa around the world with a number of well known swing dancers. He is also a history lover and one of the very few marine archaeologists in the world. Ask him about the ”Vasaship” or ”Vikingships”.

Heather Ballew

HeatherBallew.jpeg

Heather Ballew hails from the lovely, landlocked city of Denver where majestic mountains tower over the skyline, sunny days are plentiful, and the name “Mile High City” now has several connotations. As a participant of the 1990’s swing renaissance, Heather Ballew swears she learned everything the wrong way first and has relearned and refined every bit of her dancing over the years. Because of this, Heather has a keen eye for what works and what doesn’t. She believes that swing dancing should look good and feel great but most of all it should be FUN! She loves social dancing with people of all levels and she is most known for her connection and rhythmic musicality. She can be found teaching around the United States

Javier Johnson

Javier.jpg

Javier Johnson is a rocket scientist by trade, and he brings a powerful analytical sense which joins the mechanics of dance and the soul of expression. He is well versed in all the swing dances, but specializes in Balboa and soul. As an international swing dance instructor, he's travled around the world sharing his joy of teaching and his passion for jazz dances.

Music

The Greg Ruby 6

greg.jpg

will be playing the compositions and arrangements of the great 1930’s swing guitarist, Oscar Aleman. An unsung hero of the Parisian jazz guitar scene of the swing era, Aleman rivaled the infamous Django Reinhardt.

The Greg Ruby 6 debuted this project at the annual Lindy Focus event in 2017 and is excited to be bringing the project to Denver. Featuring Ruby on lead guitar, Jonathan Doyle on reeds and Andrew Finn MacGill on violin, the band will be backed up by a local rhythm section.

TravisDJ.jpg

Travis Whetman, Head DJ

Travis fell in love with swing music early in his dancing life and has been collecting it ever since. A regular Seattle DJ since 2003, Travis focuses on swing music from the 1930s and 1940s and is comfortable playing songs for many styles of dance.

Travis currently holds Head DJ roles at Camp Jitterbug, Balast Off, Rocky Mountain Balboa Blowout, and now All Balboa Weekend!!

Hot Night Fusion Weekend 2019 Instructors

Nathaniel Abrea

Nathaniel is a nationally acclaimed blues dancer who loves to social dance, compete, and teach as much as he sleeps. He is known for having precise musicality, playful movements, and expressive body shaping as a lead, follow, and solo dancer.

Nathaniel first explored dancing through a catchy choreography on YouTube in his bedroom, and continues to do so to this day. Coming from a non-technical background, he is highly attuned to his intuition for body mechanics and musicality. His intuition-first approach allows him to craft intellectually accessible and relatable lessons that reward students with new techniques to challenge themselves on their own time. He also executes each lesson with as much patience as he has excitement, and hopes to empower his students to start navigating their own personal expression within Blues.

Nathaniel has worked with dedication in the past several years, and competed and placed at many national events such as: BluesSHOUT!, Austin Blues Party, Rose City Blues, and more. He has won competitions as a Lead, Follow, and Solo dancer, and is proudly recognized as the first to officially qualify in the Blues All Star division as both a Follow and a Lead.
Nathaniel continually strives for new ways to grow, and for more things to learn, in hopes that he can share his newfound knowledge and experiences with his students.

Class Descriptions

Getting out of Your Head and into Your Body:

Dive deep into an embodied experience of individual and partnered connection with this brand new series of classes, focusing on connecting to that within which moves you. Enjoy an exploration of the physical, emotional, and energetic bodies through breath and your body's essential nature. Find pleasure in the dance, no matter the partner, song or external circumstances. Seek and find the place in which movement and connection come as naturally as breath. Find the space where partnered connection is a natural, intuitive, effortless dance and conversation between two people.

Latin Body Movement and Musicality:

When dancing fusion we incorporate many styles and flavors into our movement. When the music has Latin influence, how do you add Latin movement and musicality into your favorite dance styles? No matter your dance background, you will love this all level fun and energetic workshop to get the feel of Latin movement in your body.

Zouk Tango Fusion:

Infinite Travel - Walks and collections in all directions, elegant leg articulations.

Mastering the Pivot - Finding ease and freedom in a connected calesita, Adornos.

Afro-pop:

As a music genre Afro-pop is taking the world by storm—uniting musical elements from Africa, and pulling influences from America (i.e. Jazz, Hip Hop) and from the Caribbean (I.e. Dance hall, Soca). As a class we will break down some key street dances that tie into this infectious music, and fusing them together into a dynamic choreo.

Blues Aesthetic (Athleticism):

The "Blues Aesthetic" is a conceptual framework that deconstructs the essence of the dance form into the following aspects: Poly-centrism, Poly-rhythms, Athleticism, Lag, and Improvisation. This class will have a heavy lean on what it means to be physically and mentally Athletic while dancing blues—and will frequently touch base on the other aspects that makes Blues amazing.

I.so.late. that bad ass:

Isolation's are not only a great party tick to pull out of your hat, but they are also valuable in understanding how to control your body movement. In this class we will drill exercises and techniques that will help us self assess and execute isolation's in pleasantly effective ways.

Dancer Self-Care:

Bennie Vo is going to walk us through how to prevent injuries when dancing and how to optimize recovery when we do get injured. We will go over common injuries for dancers and learn how to recognize and address these issues. The class will focus on self and partnered exercises and stretches. Bennie hopes to inspire the dance community to cultivate a happy life and healthy practice of self care.

Kanit Photo.jpg

Kanit Dararutana

Kanit’s passion for dancing began when a friend invited him to a Blues dance workshop a couple hours away. “You should come, it will totally change your life.” Truer words we never spoken. Soon, Kanit found himself dancing 7 days a week and traveling as much as possible. Dancing consumed his life as over the next few years he branched out into many different dance styles, traveling for events, creating and nurturing dance scenes, DJing, organizing, and even a bit of teaching. Kanit found himself DJing more and more to fill the holes in his local community and found supreme joy when dancers expressed their excitement in his sets. Kanit loves to share new and old music with the community, shaping the energy of the dance floor with his sets and taking dancers on a journey for hours, especially when that music touches dancers deep down. Kanit’s favorite dance style is fusion followed closely by West Coast Swing, and Blues, but he enjoys learning any partner dance. Kanit is most passionate about sharing the world of dance and the benefits it can bring to one’s life. Nothing makes him happier than a friend who came dancing for the first time saying they loved their experience.
