CMDance School Programs

Overview of School Programs

In the face of an educational landscape marked by tight budgets, cuts to arts programming, and high-stakes testing, CMDance continues to provide children with vital access to in-school dance and music education. Currently, we reach over 2900 students every year in schools in 7 counties the Greater Denver area. Our programs use partner dancing to grant youth the tools to express themselves, communicate with others, problem-solve through improvisational thinking, take artistic risks, and engage in interdisciplinary learning experiences with historical and cultural studies.

Our primary programs comprise the following:

  1. Head Start Dance and Movement Program
  2. K-12 Multicultural Programs
  3. Guest Artist Programs

Early Childhood Dance and Movement Program

Through a partnership with the Denver Mayor’s Office of Children’s Affairs established in 2010, cmDance has introduced dance education to the Denver Great Kids Head Start Program, as well as other ECE programs in Denver. By teaching movement and dance classes to pre-school students, our program supports existing standards because it “prepares children to enter kindergarten confidently with the social, physical, emotional, and cognitive skills and competencies necessary for continued school success”. To qualify for some of this programming, the children’s families must meet income requirements, which usually means that they are at or below the poverty level. We are ecstatic to be able to provide our artistic programming to some of these youth who might not otherwise get the opportunity.

Testimonials, Feedback, and Survey Responses

“Many of the children have made improvements in following multi-step directions and now have greater appreciation of different styles of music, and now actively participate in music/movement activities within the classroom. They seem better able to attend tasks longer.”

Testimonials, Feedback, and Survey Responses

“I am…enthusiastically ready to collaborate with cmDance…to bring excellent dance instruction, for which cmDance is known, to our high school students… My students have been the fortunate recipients of guest workshops by some of the internationally recognized dance instructors brought in by cmDance… These experiences are absolutely priceless! The instructors were of the highest quality and did such outstanding work with my students that they will remember them for years to come… I am certain that as a result of these workshops and dance events, cmDance has served the dance community, increasing the number of social dancers as well as heightening the overall ability level of dance in metro Denver.”
-Brianna Lindahl, Grandview High School Dance/Theatre Teacher
“Thanks again SOO much for bringing this to our kids! Jonathan Stout was AWESOME! He was great with the kids, personable, enthusiastic, and the kids (especially my guitarists) really enjoyed visiting with him. A few students made it to the show that night and had a blast. Thanks again for all you do!”
-Zak Ruffert, Smoky Hill High School band leader, after a visit from Jonathan Stout

Guest Artist Program

When cmDance hosts nationally-recognized arts events in Colorado, our programs make the incredible teaching talent available to local youth.

Three to four times a year, world-renowned guest instructors and musicians who visit to teach workshops at large conferences also teach dance classes and music clinics at many local high schools during their stay.

These guest instructor visits inspire the students to reach new heights through unique educational opportunities. Since the inception of this program in 1999, cmDance has inspired many young dancers and provided the necessary building blocks for 10 international professional dance careers.

We’re excited for this year’s Guests Artist schedule which includes: Lindy Hop, Jazz with Sara Deckard, Chicago Footwork with Rob of Creation Global,Balboa, Jazz, Lindy Hop with Bobby White, and Latin dance styles with Heriberto Perez (see a YouTube video of some of his work on the right).
